Messenger Arrives to Mercury

It has been more than 30 years since a spacecraft of any kind has traveled to Mercury.
NASA outfitted spacecraft Messenger with a Narrow Angle Camera (NAC), which is part of the Mercury Dual Imaging System (NDIS), in order to best photograph Mercury's surface.
Messenger arrived to Mercury on January 14, 2008 and began taking pictures at the rate of 4 per minute. The spacecraft acquired a total of 288 images.
NASA presented the pictures in a form of a movie at a press conference on January 28, 2008.

The pictures are pretty cool. 12 of Messenger's departing shots can be viewed at www.astronomy.com/asy/default.aspx?c=a&id=6452 .
